More than two years after coming second at EPT London, Swedish pro Michael Tureniec has finally claimed an EPT title, taking down the Season 7 EPT Copenhagen main event. The 25-year-old, from Stockholm, beat fellow Swede Per Linde to snag the DKK 3,700,000 first prize (approximately €496,271). His victory also earned him a stunning bracelet from EPT Copenhagen Official Bracelet Sponsor Shamballa Jewels, and a seat into the Season 7 EPT Grand Final in Madrid in May.
Tureniec, 25, has now amassed more than $2.5 million in live tournament winnings. In addition to his runner-up finish at EPT5 London, for £525,314, he chopped the EPT Barcelona €2,000 side event last November with fellow Copenhagen finalist John Eames, earning €140,000.
He said: “I’m feeling very happy. It’s been a good day. I’m glad I managed to win against such tough opponents. I’m very proud. It’s such a tough field here with a lot of Scandinavian players. My plan now is to first get a driver’s license, then get a nice car.”
As always at EPT Copenhagen, Scandinavians dominated the field. There were 38 countries represented but more than half the 449 players came from Denmark (109), Sweden and Norway. Among the 141 players who won their seats on PokerStars were serial PokerStars qualifiers Johan Van Til, who came 51st for DKK 55,000, and Friend of PokerStars Pierre Neuville, who finished 45th for 65,00 DKK. The total prize pool was DKK 15,086,400 (approx. €2,023,496)
A total of 64 players made the money including Team PokerStars Pros Florian Langmann (19th; DKK 85,000 / €11,401), Johnny Lodden (32nd, DKK 75,000 / €10,060) and JP Kelly (41st, DKK 65,000 / €8,718). Danish table tennis champion Michael Maze and 2008 world champion Peter Eastgate, who was sponsored by PokerStars, also competed.
Defending Copenhagen champion Anton Wigg didn’t cash in the Main Event but thrived in the side events, taking third place in the DKK 15,000 event, for DKK 157,000 and winning the DKK 50,000 event the next day earning DKK 304,000. Pia Jeppsen from Copenhagen won the DKK 2,200 Ladies Event, for 27,456 DKK, after beating a 26-strong field. Danish player Jannick Wrang won the DKK 22,500 Heads-up event.
Portuguese businessman Fernando Brito extended his lead in the EPT Player of the Year race by winning one of the last events of the week, the DKK 7,500 Random Bounty tourney.
EPT spokesperson Kirsty Thompson said: “Yet again EPT Copenhagen has proved a massive success and, as always, a huge number of Scandinavian players took part. This made for a very exciting five days leading up to a world-class final table. Congratulations are due to all those who made the money, especially our winner Michael Tureniec and PokerStars qualifier Kevin Iacofano, who came fourth earning more than €130,000 after winning his seat in a €215 satellite.”
The final two days of the EPT Copenhagen Main Event were broadcast on EPTLive.
The next stop on the PokerStars European Poker Tour is the €3,500 buy-in EPT Snowfest event in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria from March 20-25, 2011. Satellites are running now on PokerStars as well as for EPT Berlin which runs from April 5-10, 2011. Satellites start tomorrow for the EPT Grand Final which is taking place in Madrid from May 7-12.
